Oystercatcher

Oystercatcher

When to see

Oystercatchers are one of the few waders that can be seen in the bay year round. Numbers do drop however in the summer as the breeding birds move inland. A few breed around the Reserve on the less disturbed shingle banks.

Where to see

Oystercatcher can be seen throughout the bay and will not necessarily feed close to water. A good number can also be seen feeding on the mussel banks at the entrance to the bay most days at low water. They will roost at high tide on the edge of the bay.

Plumage

There is little change in the plumage through the year although in winter they will develop a white chinstrap.
